All paramedics started out as EMTs. For those interested in taking our one semester EMT course please Visit our EMT page.  We also offer a pre-paramedic certificate of technical studies for students working on their pre-requisites for a paramedic program. This degree will meet the minimum requirements to apply for any paramedic program within the Montana University System. They next enrolled and successfully completed a paramedic program, which included Advanced Life Support (ALS) coursework, such as IVs, advanced airways, medication administration/pharmacology, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), advanced trauma management, and patient assessment.

Paramedics typically work for ALS ambulance services, ALS fire departments, and aeromedical transport.

In a typical work setting:

  • Have a high level of social interaction. They constantly work with the public and other emergency workers.
  • Typically respond to 911 calls, transport between medical facilities, and do medical standbys at sporting events, such as football games.
  • Most work 40-48 hour work weeks, which include shifts from as little as 10 hours per day to 24 hour shifts, and as little as 8 days per month.

Paramedics and EMTs can be found in a variety of environments, such as:

The Paramedic program is a City College MSU-Billings degree. However, students can work on completing the prerequisite courses through Great Falls College MSU, then apply to the competitive entry Sprint paramedic program through City College MSU-Billings. If accepted in the program, this online pathway offers the classroom lecture coursework through a combination of video presentations, online chats, and online meetings with your instructors.  This pathway will still require some on campus labs in Billings.  Clinical and Field Internship rotations can then be completed at an approved location.  Successful completion of this pathway will allow the student to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Paramedic Exam as well as earn an Associates of Applied Science Degree in Paramedicine.
