GREAT FALLS COLLEGE MSU HOSTS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS DAY

Great Falls, MT—Great Falls College MSU will host a Mental Health Awareness Day on Wednesday, March 30, from noon through 4 p.m. in an effort to educate students and the community about mental health disorders, and to decrease the negative stigmas associated with mental health issues. The events and presentations will take place in Heritage Hall at Great Falls College MSU, which is located at 2100 16th Avenue South in Great Falls.

Headlining the event will be Mr. Matt Kuntz, Executive Director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness for Montana (NAMI). Mr. Kuntz’s presentation will begin at 2:30 p.m. in Heritage Hall and will focus on steps the Great Falls community can take to increase awareness of mental health issues, and to destigmatize help-seeking behaviors. From noon until 2:30 p.m., a series of NAMI videos regarding mental health issues will stream in Heritage Hall.

Throughout the afternoon several community organizations will have resource tables set up with representatives available for discussion. This will serve as an excellent opportunity for students, faculty, staff and community members to learn about these mental health agencies and the services they offer. Organizations being represented will include Eating Disorders Task Force, Great Falls Psychiatric Crisis Triage Services, Gateway Community Services, National Alliance on Mental Illness, Great Falls College MSU Veterans Center, Voices of Hope, Center for Mental Health, Rocky Mountain Treatment Center, AWARE and the Cascade County Mental Health Local Advisory Council. As part of the event, the Great Falls Psychiatric Crisis Triage Services will have clinicians available to complete depression and anxiety screenings for students and the public.

When asked why this event was being organized at Great Falls College MSU, psychology faculty Elfie Neber said, “We wanted to give our psychology students, and really all of our students and community a greater awareness of mental health issues and help normalize the fact that any one of us might find ourselves struggling with a psychological disorder at some point in our lives. Hopefully, through education we can reduce the stigma associated with the words, ‘mental illness.’”

This event is free of charge, and the public is encouraged to attend.

The mission of Great Falls College MSU is to Educate and Inspire You.
