GREAT FALLS COLLEGE MSU STUDENT RECOGNIZED AS 2016 NEWMAN CIVIC FELLOW AWARD RECIPIENT

GREAT FALLS —Great Falls College MSU student, Lucas Volkomener, was selected as a 2016 Newman Civic Fellow Award Recipients by Campus Compact. Mr. Volkomener is one of 218 Newman Civic Fellow Award Recipients nationwide.

“It is an honor and privilege to recommend and support Lucas Volkomener for the Newman Civic Fellow Award,” said Dr. Susan J. Wolff, CEO and Dean at Great Falls College MSU. “Lucas is one of the most community-minded students we have had at Great Falls College MSU. This has been witnessed in his role as a student both in and out of the classroom, and as a member of the Great Falls Community.”

Lucas served in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant and served three tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. During his service, he was awarded a Purple Heart for his service to our country. “He is open to sharing his experiences, which are often unimaginable to his classmates and college staff, and his drive to improve the world through information and understanding is inspirational,” Wolff said. “Outside of the classroom, Lucas goes above and beyond to help his fellow students and support the Veterans Success Center at Great Falls College MSU.” Mr. Volkomener’s educational goal is to become a flight nurse.

The Newman Civic Fellows Award is named in honor of Frank Newman, one of Campus Compact’s founders and a tireless advocate for the role of higher education in preparing students for active and engaged citizenship.

The Newman Civic Fellows Award honors inspiring college student leaders who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country. Through service, research, and advocacy, Newman Civic Fellows are making the most of their college experiences to better understand themselves, the root causes of social issues, and effective mechanisms for creating lasting change. These students represent the next generation of public problem solvers and civic leaders. They serve as national examples of the role that higher education can—and does—play in building a better world. The Newman Civic Fellows Awards are made possible through the generous support of the KPMG Foundation and Newman’s Own Foundation.
