GREAT FALLS – Beginning fall semester 2017, Great Falls College MSU will offer a new option for students looking to pursue their passion for music.
The college will begin offering music coursework leading to the two-year Associate of Arts degree. These courses will transfer seamlessly to a four-year music program.
“This is a great way for local students to start a bachelor’s degree in music,” said Cynthia Stevens, department chair of Fine Arts and Humanities at GFC MSU. “It’s meant to serve folks who want to pursue music performance, music education, composition or even music business.”
During the two years required to complete an Associate of Arts, students will take a range of music courses, including ear training, music theory and keyboard skills.
“We have this great K-12 music program in our public schools, and we wanted to offer a new option for local students who would like to continue their musical studies after high school,” Stevens said.
After students graduate from GFC MSU with the Associate of Arts, they may transfer their degree and music credits to a four-year university and complete a bachelor’s degree in a music-related field. They also have the option of transferring and completing a degree in a different field.
Many students choose to start their college experience at GFC MSU to save money and to learn about college in a smaller environment before transferring to a four-year university.
This new music coursework will be taught by local professional musicians with the credentials to teach at the college level.
“There is an amazing number of local musicians in our community who have master’s degrees and doctorates,” said Leanne Frost, director of General Education, Business, Technology and Transfer. “We’re excited to offer another opportunity for students to start a degree in Great Falls and transfer to earn a bachelor’s degree.”
