GREAT FALLS – The Great Falls College Community Choir will present its annual spring concert on May 3 at 7 p.m. in Heritage Hall at Great Falls College MSU, 2100 16th Ave. S.
The Great Falls College Community Choir and the Great Falls College Children’s Choir will perform a variety of music, all by American composers.
“This whole spring semester has been dedicated to American music,” said Choir Director Cynthia Stevens.
The music will include a mix of gospel hymns and Americana.
“A concert featuring American music would not be complete without selections by Aaron Copland,” Stevens said. “This concert is no exception.”
The choir will perform Copland tunes including: “Simple Gifts,” “Younger Generation” and “Stomp Your Foot!” Described as a “choral square dance,” Copland’s “Stomp Your Foot!” features a one piano/four hands accompaniment. Accomplished pianists Sharman Tokerud and Tyler Menzel will bring this piece to life. Menzel will also be featured on the flute accompaniment for “The Rain and Snow from Heaven,” a piece based on an English folksong and set by composer David Ashley White from Texas.
“We’ve never done a concert that is completely American music,” Stevens said.
The concert is free and open to the public. However, donations are accepted. There will also be a quilt raffle held during the concert. The handmade quilt was made and donated by Jacque Caldwell. Tickets are $5 each and are available until the beginning of the concert.
Money raised will help offset the cost of new performance attire for the choir.
