Hotspot Availability

Wireless hotspots are available for currently enrolled students to check out each 8-week block. The library has 12 hotspots available on a first-come-first-serve basis. To check out a hotspot you will need to visit the library’s circulation desk and provide your NetID or student ID number.

Many of the hotspots are provided and paid for by the Montana State Library Hotspot Lending Program.

Hotspots may be renewed by phone, email, or in-person once. After one renewal, the hotspot will be due and will go to the next person on the waiting list. If there is no one on the waiting list, the hotspot may be renewed a second time. After a second renewal, the device must be returned for staff inspection. At this time a new device can be loaned if one is available. Hotspots must be returned to a staff member at the circulation desk.

Students on the waitlist will be contacted in the order that they were added to the list. It is unlikely that a hotspot will become available in the middle of a block as they are not due until the end of the block. It is most likely that a hotspot will become available between blocks. When a device becomes available the library will call you and leave a message. Please ensure your voicemail box is set up and you check your messages.

Wireless hotspots depend on cell towers to provide wireless internet/data service. Hotspots will not work in areas that have poor cell coverage.

  • Try turning the hotspot off and back on again.
  • Make sure the device you are trying to connect to is wifi compatible.
  • Double check that the device you are trying to connect has wifi turned on and is connected to the correct network name.
  • DO NOT factory reset the device. You will not be able to use it if you reset it.
  • If none of the above steps work, please contact the library for further assistance. In most cases, the hotspot will need to be looked at in person to troubleshoot issues.

Overdue fines are charged for technology items that are not returned by the due date. If you cannot return an item on time, please contact the library in advance to make alternate arrangements. Replacement costs are charged for damaged or lost technology items. Students who return a device with excessive damage will no longer be able to check out loanable technology from the library.

If the hotspot is not returned, service to the hotspot will be deactivated and the replacement cost will be charged to your student account.

Replacement costs for hotspots are $100-200 depending on model specifications.
