GREAT FALLS – Great Falls College MSU music instructor and composer Dr. Sam Krahn will give a performance Friday, April 20 at 7 p.m. at Great Falls College MSU.
Krahn is the recipient of the Artist’s Innovation Award from the Montana Arts Council. As an award recipient, Krahn was asked to give a presentation about his work that is free and open to the public.
The presentation will focus on Krahn’s graphic score, titled Tetractys Study, and his work with the Montana Improvisers Orchestra. The Tetractys Study is made up of 15 charcoal and graphite sketches that performers react to in the moment.
“The images impose no restrictions or expectations on the sound world that will be produced, and the musical results are infinitely variable depending on the participants and images selected for the performance,” Krahn explained.
After Krahn’s presentation, the Montana Improvisers Orchestra will lead the audience through a performance of Tetractys Study. Some instruments will be available, though audience members are encouraged to bring an instrument to play.
“People of all musical skill levels are welcome to participate in this performances,” Krahn said. “It’s meant to be an interactive experience for the audience.”
The Artist’s Innovation Award honors artists who have introduced something new or different. This can include new methods, applications, perspectives, elements, forms, materials, technology integration or project concepts.
Krahn is a composer, guitarist, performer, and teacher. He is also the founder of the Montana Improvisers Orchestra. At GFC MSU, he teaches Music Theory, Aural Perception and Applied Guitar Instruction.
The performance will be held in Heritage Hall at Great Falls College MSU, 2100 16th Ave. S.
