GREAT FALLS – Nationwide, Girl Scouts are making a push to expose girls to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields at a younger age. Locally, the Girl Scouts of Montana and Wyoming North Central Region and Great Falls College MSU are helping with that effort by hosting a STEM day for Girl Scouts in November.
The event, called STEM Stars, will take place on Nov. 4 from 1-5 p.m. at Great Falls College MSU, 2100 16th Ave. S. Participants will have the opportunity to explore a wide variety of STEM careers ranging from chemistry and math to dentistry and surgery.
“It’s well known that girls do not typically get exposed to those fields as much as they should,” said Annie Crutchfield, volunteer support manager for Girl Scouts of Montana and Wyoming North Central Region.
STEM Stars will feature stations located throughout the GFC MSU campus. Girls will rotate through stations where they will get a chance to learn about different career fields. Most stations will feature a GFC MSU professor. Stations include nursing, surgical technology, dentistry, welding, chemistry and more.
“It’s a very hands-on event,” Crutchfield said.
The event is open to all girl scouts in the region. Participants must be current girl scouts. Those who are not currently girl scouts can join the organization in order to attend the event. Scholarships are available.
Those interested in registering for the STEM Stars should contact Annie Crutchfield at 800-736-5243 or [email protected].
“I hope girls just have a broader understanding of what is possible for them,” Crutchfield said. “We want this event to open their eyes to the career options that exist.”
For Great Falls College MSU, the event is a chance to teach girls about the educational opportunities that can help them get into these fields.
“This is a great opportunity to get kids on our campus and for them to learn about what’s possible for their future,” said Heather Palermo, director of the Center for Lifelong Learning at GFC MSU.
