GREAT FALLS – Great Falls College MSU STEM Club students and science faculty will be hosting a high-altitude balloon launch on Saturday, Oct. 29, pending favorable weather.
The Geology Class led by instructor Raimund Hahn will be sending up sensors to record atmospheric conditions for a class project comparing data collected from similar launches over the last several years.
“Weather balloons are a great way to explore science,” explained Hahn. “They are project-based learning at its best. Students will use real data collected to make observations and draw conclusions. We also are attempting to reach the altitude record for Montana with this launch.”
Launch preparation and balloon filling will begin at 8 a.m. at Great Falls College MSU, 2100 16th Ave. S., on the lawn outside the dental clinic. The launch is open to the public and a great opportunity to see science in action.
Please check the GFC MSU Facebook page for updates on the launch status in case of changing weather conditions. You can also follow the balloon’s progress live by going to http://aprs.fi and look for the balloon symbol.
