Great Falls College celebrates American Indian Heritage Day

GREAT FALLS —A community celebration of American Indian Heritage Day will be held Friday, September 23, at Great Falls College MSU, 2100 16th Avenue South.

American Indian Heritage Day provides an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to honor the Native American culture and gain insight into native traditions. Activities for the day will begin at 9 a.m. in front of the Atrium, with activities following throughout the day:

  • 9 a.m. – Prayer circle and smudging ceremony, by Don Fish
  • 10 a.m. – Presentation on how to set up a tipi, by Don Fish
  • Noon – Lunch, Heritage Hall breakout area
  • 1:30 p.m. – Beading demonstration, by GFC MSU student Paula Harwood

Traditional American Indian dances will take place throughout the morning.

“The goal of Native American Heritage Day is to share the beauty and history of the American Indian culture with students, faculty and staff at the college, as well as to raise awareness of the Native American Enrichment Center on campus,” said Hans Hyppolite, VISTA volunteer with the Native American Enrichment Center at Great Falls College MSU.

The Native American Enrichment Center at Great Falls College MSU focuses on fostering learning and success of all students at the college, while also providing American Indian students a place of culture and heritage where they can gather and study with peers.

The American Indian Heritage Day celebration and events are free and open to the public.
