GREAT FALLS – Great Falls College MSU faculty member, Dr. Darryl Stevens, has been named one of the Montana University System’s Regents Teaching Scholars. Dr. Stevens is the department chair for History and Cultural Studies.
According to the Montana University System, the Regents Teaching Scholars program recognizes teachers who have made exemplary contributions to teaching and learning at campuses in the Montana University System. The inaugural cohort of Scholars will lead faculty learning communities on their home campus during spring semester 2020 and focus their work on high impact practices such as first year seminars, undergraduate research, collaborative assignments, service learning, and more.
“This is a great opportunity for institutions across the state to work together to promote student success through research-based high impact practices,” said Dr. Leanne Frost, GFC MSU General Studies Division Director. “Dr. Stevens has always demonstrated the utmost concern for his students’ learning and will bring his enthusiasm for excellent teaching to the program.”
GFC MSU has been creating learning communities to help students succeed for the past four years. Dr. Stevens will lead a team of Great Falls College MSU faculty to research ways to improve learning communities on a smaller campus like GFC MSU. One method may be to focus more on creating communities within an individual class. The team will implement several different strategies and assess student success within those classes. The data will be used to a create a campus-wide plan for the future.
“There are several institutions in Montana with similar student body sizes,” said Dr. Stevens. “Great Falls College MSU is excited to share the story of our success and challenges through this process. I am honored to have been selected to be a part of this program.”
The Regents Teaching Scholars will meet regularly throughout the program to discuss areas of interest and lead innovative change in teaching practices. The goal is to increase student success and retention.
