GREAT FALLS – Great Falls College MSU, in conjunction with Cuban Choir to Montana and the International Choral Festival, will be hosting a Cuban choir in July.
The Cantores de Cienfuegos, a 23-member choir from Cienfuegos, Cuba, will perform Monday, July 11 at Great Falls College MSU at 7 p.m. in Heritage Hall. Great Falls College MSU is located at 2100 16th Ave. S.
The group will perform again in Florence on July 12 and several times July 13-16 as part of the International Choral Festival in Missoula.
Great Falls resident Kerry Callahan Bronson is the driving force behind bringing the choir to Montana. She saw the group perform in 2013 when she visited Cuba. “The choir started singing and everybody’s jaw just dropped,” Bronson recalled. “They were just amazing.”
Some of Bronson’s friends also saw the group perform in Cuba and got the idea to bring the choir to the International Choral Festival held in Missoula.
Bronson and her friends have been working to raise funds for the choir’s trip. “We have had donations from people all over the country who have heard them in Cuba,” she said. Plane tickets and travel arrangements, including visas and other required permits, have been secured for the group.
While in Great Falls, Cantores de Cienfuegos choir members will be hosted by members of the Great Falls College Community Choir.
“This will be an incredible opportunity for our choir members to have an international experience and form relationships with fellow musicians,” said Cynthia Stevens, director of the Great Falls College Community Choir.
“I want this to be a people-to-people experience,” Bronson said. “By doing this, we’re going to reach the everyday people of Cuba. They’re going to bring back stories of what happened in Missoula and Great Falls, Montana.”
The concert on July 11 at Great Falls College MSU is free, but donations are encouraged.
