GREAT FALLS – The transition for any student from high school to college can be a challenging one. However, for students with disabilities, those challenges can be far greater.

Two events on Wednesday, July 27 at Great Falls College MSU aim to help ease those challenges. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., a workshop geared toward educators and counselors will focus on the skills necessary for these students to be college ready, while also learning the pitfalls that should be avoided. In the evening there will be a free session designed for parents and students. It runs from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in Heritage Hall at Great Falls College MSU, 2100 16th Ave. S.

Elizabeth C. Hamblet, author of “7 Steps for Success: High School to College Transition Strategies for Students with Disabilities,” will present the all-day workshop, titled “Preparing Students with Disabilities for Successful Transition,” as well as the evening session.

“We would encourage anyone who wants more information on transitioning beyond high school to attend this event,” said Kathy Meier, Director of Disability Services at Great Falls College MSU. “Great Falls College offers a wide range of services for students with disabilities. Students enrolled at Great Falls College MSU have a right to reasonable accommodations in order to fully participate in the postsecondary educational experience.”

Parents and students interested in attending the free evening session do not need to register.

Educators, counselors and others who are interested in the all-day session, need to register in advance. Registration is available online at https://goo.gl/js84qg. Continuing education credits are available. This workshop is being sponsored by the Pre-Employment Transitions Technical Assistance Center through funding from the Montana Vocational Rehabilitation and Blind Services.
