GREAT FALLS – Great Falls College MSU hosted the Montana Region II Science and Engineering Fair on March 13 and 15.
On March 13, more than 140 elementary school students grades K-5 displayed projects ranging from ways to protect an egg from cracking to how to power a clock with a lemon.
March 15 featured more than 300 middle school and high school students, grades 6-12.
Region II includes schools in Glacier, Toole, Liberty, Teton, Pondera, Cascade, and Judith Basin counties. Twelve schools participated in the two days of the fair.
“We were very impressed by the projects presented at this year’s Science Fair,” said Dr. Leanne Frost, Director of General Studies at Great Falls College MSU and the Region II Science Fair Director. “It’s amazing to see the ideas students come up with and how they put the scientific process to use.”
The top winners of the high school science fair were Mackenzie Wiegand and Madison Wiegand of Simms High School, who looked at silver nanoparticle water filtration using UV, and Christian Bloch of North Toole County High School whose project focused on marine hydrocarbon bioremediation. Those three students will advance to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held in Pittsburgh in May.
